EFT in Science?
Could EFT help humanity in its search for scientific truth?

I just watched Horizon, BBC2 (UK) entitled “A War on Science”. The subject was the debate (often in the form of lawsuits) between evolutionary theorists (scientists) and the latest version of creationism (reinvented as "intelligent design").

I watched a series of people speaking passionately about what they believed in. I saw a lot of very intelligent and resourceful people defend some very entrenched positions. I saw a lot of data filters (beliefs) interpreting what they saw in the light of their existing convictions.

What I did not see was anyone, on either “side” who, in the light of the objective evidence, changed their position or even remotely adjusted their viewpoint. (Of course we must account for the "selectiveness" of TV editors - someone who can "see both sides" doesn't make for such dramatic TV!)

Funny. I thought science was a search for Truth. Actually, I thought religion was a search for Truth too. I’m sure both scientists and religionists of all kinds, believe themselves to be ardently seeking the Truth, or to have already found it.

In my experience as a coach, EFT practitioner and general human being, I have never EVER met anyone who believed anything for no reason. There isn’t a single person on the planet deliberately holding a false belief. It simply does not seem to be in the nature of human beings to "seek Untruth" as a goal.

ALL beliefs we hold are for a reason. And ALL those reasons are emotional.

And so, I suggest a whole new application for EFT – in the field of science.

True scientists often wish for “true objectivity” – to see the data free of bias. In other words, to transcend their own preferences and beliefs.

Here are just a few setup statements the ardent objectivist might use before a day’s work conducting experiments or evaluating the research of others:

“Even though I’d really like X to be true, I deeply and completely…”
“Even though I hate the idea of Y,
  …”
“Even though I can’t imagine Z being true, …”
“Even though my whole career depends on X being true,…”
“Even though everyone is expecting me to come up with the definitive argument in favour of W”

"Even though I don't want X to be true"
"Even though I really dislike the person/people who propose this theory / wrote this paper"
"Even though I feel this jealousy/anger/frustration/irritation when I read this
"Even though I know my Dad/Mum/family would disagree with what I believe..."
"Even though I'd really like this experiment to come out a particular way..."
"Even though the data I'm looking at seems to contradict everything I thought I knew..."

One additional thought.... Even if you're not a "scientist" by profession, you can still use EFT in this way for any issue where you'd like to make sure your emotions and biases aren't getting in your way - such as making important choices and decisions.

Paul McKenna uses tapping on UK TV

UK readers may recently have seen Paul McKenna's new series on Sky TV called "I Can Make You Thin" (January 2006). Based on his recent book of the same title, the 4 part series gives participants a few simple rules for eating and some additional techniques to assist with weightloss. As Paul McKenna is one of the UK's most renowned hypnotists and NLP trainers it's no surprise that visualisation and NLP techniques feature strongly in his repertoire of tools.

But what marks this programme out is its use of tapping as a way of managing cravings. The tapping used isn't EFT, but a specific TFT algorithm designed especially for cravings. (TFT=Thought Field Therapy and is a precursor of EFT).

The second show of the series focussed almost exclusively on the use of this algorithm and featured one lady who was addicted to cola - to the tune of 4 litres of cola per day. After being guided through the algorithm over the phone by Paul, her cravings subsided immediately. She used the algorithm a few more times after that whenever a craving came up again, but when interviewed in the studio a few weeks later she reported having drunk no cola at all and now drank juice and water only.

Details of the show, Paul McKenna's programme and the TFT craving formula can be found on the Sky One website.
